A very good, highly collectible first edition, first state copy of this early novel by this Pulitzer Prize winning author. First Edition, First Printing as indicated by lack of statement of printing on copyright page. First state variant with "Cantry" rather than "Gantry" printed on the spine. A very good hardcover copy, dark blue cloth-covered boards and spine with orange stamping. Spine has very slight lean. Bottom page edges scuffed, textblock edges dirty. Endpapers have glue stains in the gutters. Board corners slightly rounded, top corner of back board bumped. Not ex-library, no previous owner markings, book plates, or remainder marks. Included is a slip from the publisher indicating publication date and price, so evidently this copy was sent for review, although this slip differs from the slips pasted on the front free endpaper in other review copies seen. Good original first printing dust jacket with price ($2.50) centered at bottom of front flap. Flap corners are machine clipped, which was not uncommon for this era. The spine and covers have tears and missing chunks at top and bottom edges. Rear cover has smudges/smears from shelving. Presents nicely in Brodart protective dust jacket cover.
